Mac (Leon Lai) is a professional
thief who shoots his once partner for killing his girlfriend in
a bungled operation. He is later caught and meets two Small-time
thieves in prison. On release, they join forces to become the 'Skyline
Cruisers' of the title. During an operation to steal a cancer vaccine
they discover that they have a worthy adversary and Mac is having
strong feelings towards a girl who may not be what she first appears.
As a sort of semi-sequel to Teddy Chans 'Downtown Torpedoes
this film outdoes it in every department. With a bigger budget to
play with director Yip sets his film in Malaysia with a more high
profile cast and delivers a film that is undeniably good entertainment.
The script is tight (despite a few obvious glitches) and allows
for a very high quota of action. There are also enough well timed
comic set pieces to keep things moving along nicely. Obviously based
on John Woo's 'Mission Impossible 2', 'Skyline Cruisers' still manages
to have enough original ideas of it's own with gadgets galore. Occasionally
the script is a little too predictable and Leon Lai is perhaps a
little too wooden in the starring role but the supporting cast make
up for this. Jordan Chan comes off looking best in both the acting
and action side of things (check out his psuedo-light sabre duel
for evidence!) Sam Lee is also good in his now familiar 'goofy-hero'
guise. Shu Qi develops her role nicely but the amount of screen
time she is allowed does not quite do her character justice. The
climax itself is extremely overblown but it ties everything up nicely
and manages to throw in a few nice special effects as well.
Definitely one of the more entertaining big-budget Hong Kong films
of 2000 Skyline Cruisers manages to mix an exotic location
with an attractive cast to produce a solid 85 minutes of no-brainer
entertainment. There is not a lot of character development here
and anyone expecting a realistic look at spies and spying are in
the wrong theatre If youre looking for a slick action film
then this makes perfect Saturday night entertainment.
