Set
in a small town in Taiwan Bu (Shu Qi) finds a bottle with a note
inside. It is from a man in search of true love and she flies to
Hong Kong to pursue her romantic dream. However, the man she finds
is gay. Staying in Hong Kong Bu meets CN Chan (Jackie) who is a
local business owner and very rich. They fall in love with each
other but then Bu discovers CN is a playboy by nature and returns
to Taiwan with a broken heart...
With this film you'll either love it or hate it. But one thing is
certain. It contains more fight scenes from Jackie than any of his
more recent offerings. It is a sad thing in a way that Jackie is
also looking noticeably older (although he can still bust a move!).
Jackie seems aware of this and therefore surrounds himself with
another top notch fighter to showcase. Brad Allen (Jackie's fighting
adversary) is brilliant here and shows off some killer moves that
will have you gasping. The other leads fare less well. Tony Leung
is underused and ex-Category III star Shu Qui spends the entire
film pouting. However, if you find her attractive she fits the role
quite well. Although slow in places (Jackie doesn't turn up for
half an hour) there are some very funny bits. Emil Chau is a fine
comedy player and makes a very honorable and funny villain and Ken
Lo plays a very good bumbling henchman. The funniest though is Chow
Sing Chi's all too brief cameo. Him and Jackie should make a whole
film together one day!
Overall a break from the norm for Jackie which will not appeal to
his usual fans. But if you're patient there is much to enjoy here.
The music and main romance plot will remind you of a Disney film
but with Jackie. For a Hong Kong film the script is also quite tight
and the conclusion manages to tie up all the loose ends to a satisfying
end.
