Jackie
is 'City Hunter' a womanising private detective hired to track down
a rich man's daughter. Her trail leads him to a cruise ship which
is later hijacked by terrorists. Jackie and his gang of women must
try and save the ship from the terrorists who are holding the rich
hostages to ransom.
This would have to rank as Jackie's funniest film, some of the jokes
are simply hilarious. Based on a Japanese anime comic this film
feels like a live action cartoon and Jackie's portrayal of the lead
character is very funny indeed. Jackie doesn't seem to care as he
pulls stupid faces and cracks onto every woman that he sees. Scripted
by Wong Jing rumours say that there were problems between him and
Jackie on the set. This is not evident in the finished script and
if anything Jackie has tried to up the action content to compensate.
The fights that there are are either extremely over-the-top (check
out the 'Streetfighter II' scene choreographed by Ching Siu Tung!)
or very funny and well thought out. British martial arts star Gary
Daniels is extremely good and gives his role his all. One problem
is the end fight between Jackie and Richard Norton. It is well choreographed
but Norton is obviously doubled by JC stunt team member Ken Lo due
to time constraints. The women are all experienced Hong Kong flm
veterans (Chingamy Yau and Joey Wong) are are just right for Chan
to drape himself over whenever he can.
Wong Jing's humour is quite juvenile (and very politically incorrect)
so defiantly not to everyone's taste. Also some of the characters
are a bit surplus to requirements. This film does certainly not
take itself seriously and some people may see it as a farce, but
it is hugely entertaining. It also lampoons many other films such
as 'Die Hard' and Jing's own 'God of Gamblers'. Typical Wong Jing
and one for the big kid in all of us.
