Leslie Cheung is a junior triad who becomes a chef, gets a job in a restaurant, and befriends the owner's teenybopper daughter (Anita Yuen). When an evil competitor forces Cheung's boss to bet his restaurant on a cooking contest Cheung must find China's one-time greatest chef - now an emotional wreck - and get him back on his feet to save the day.

Tsui Hark realised that it was time he made a sure fire commercial hit rather than carry on with pet projects. This is the result and is a very confident piece of filmmaking. Tsui wields his narrative with extreme confidence and the result is a very funny (if sometimes boring) comedy. If you are a fan of the teen idol stars (Leslie Cheung and Anita Yuen) you will find much to enjoy here as they share a number of comedy routines with aplomb. Tsui Hark has managed to utilise film techniques from his martial arts films and apply them to the comedy genre. Each cooking sequence punctuates the film like a fight scene and there is even a baddie (Hung Yan Yan) who the final showdown is against. The cooking scenes themselves are extremely inventive and offer up a variety of very unusual dishes (ie. polar bear hand!). Also, in something of a departure from usual Hong Kong film rules Tsui has decided to shoot this film in synch-sound Cantonese, and it is very refreshing to hear the actor's actual voices. It gives the film a more personal touch that allows you to sympathise more with the characters.

Not so much a screwball comedy but instead quite a slow entertaining film. Don't watch it if you're an action fan, but if you like any of the stars, or are a fan of Tsui's work it is quite a nice little feelgood film that passes a few hours. Tsui is taking his recent influences from certain Western filmmakers and in the hands of a less experienced director this film would not have been as entertaining or well made.
